Car Rentals If you’re planning on renting a vehicle on your upcoming trip to Hawaii, it’s important that you are familiar with all of the policies and procedures carried out by the rental service you’re using. Often, folks renting vehicles have to utilize what’s known as an after hours car return. These returns come into play in a few different situations, and there are some things you should know if you need to utilize one. Familiarizing yourself with the process prior to renting a vehicle could save you from running into trouble later on down the line.

Planning Ahead
If you’re planning on dropping off your rental car either late at night or in the early hours of the morning before the rental service opens, there’s a good chance you’ll be taking advantage of an after hours car return. It may sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple.

First of all, you should discuss with an agent at the rental company whether this service is offered. If it is, you’ll then be able to arrange for the return. Typically, you need to communicate with the company beforehand if you plan on dropping your car off either after or before business hours. You may be provided with special instructions, and you’ll need to place your rental agreement and keys in a designated drop box on site.

Feel Confident About Your Rental
Regardless of whether or not damage has occurred to the vehicle, it’s a good idea to snap a few photos of the car before leaving it for the after hours return. This way, if the company does try and say you caused damage when you didn’t – you’ll have photographic evidence of the car’s condition at the time of drop off. If damage has occurred, you’ll want to contact the rental company as soon as possible. Different companies have different policies regarding this, so information pertinent to your situation will be required.

Now that you know the basics about dropping a rental vehicle off after hours, consult with the company you’re renting from to find out their specific policies and procedures. Keep in mind that every company is different and that some may charge for this convenience while others offer it free of charge. Whatever the case may be, knowing what is required on your end is absolutely essential to ensuring you’re not hit with a fee down the line for not following compliance.
