If you’re planning on visiting the beautiful Hawaiian Islands in the near future, there’s a good chance that you’ll want to take advantage of a rental car. Renting a vehicle will allow you to move freely about the Island and do so on your own watch. You won’t have to pay for costly taxi cab services and your group won’t have to allot extra time to wait on public transportation. However, when renting a vehicle it’s important to remember that certain rules and regulations do come into play. Knowing the driver’s license requirements in Hawaii you’ll need to follow is important. Whether you’re traveling in from the United States or overseas, we can help you understand exactly what you need to successfully rent a vehicle.

United States Travelers

If you’re planning on renting a vehicle and you posses a United States driver’s license, it’s fairly obvious that you’ll need to bring this with you. The license will need to be valid for the entire duration of your trip, so be sure that you’re not coming up on an expiration date. If you are, be sure you have your license renewed PRIOR to going on your vacation.

Keep in mind that some rental companies will also pull a driving record. This can show things like revocation or suspension of license, moving violations, DUI’s and more. This can ultimately play a role in whether you are able to rent a vehicle, so be sure that you are aware of which companies do and do not perform this check if you are concerned about an issue popping up.

Also – learner’s permits are not valid driver’s licenses and cannot be used to rent a vehicle in the United States.

Overseas Travelers

If you’re renting a vehicle and you posses a driver’s license from another country, you will need to present this at the time of vehicle pick-up. If your license is in another language, you will need to provide an International Driver’s Permit as well. This permit can be used alone to rent a car, so if you are hesitant about using your license – it may be in your best interest to secure this permit before you travel.

As a rule of thumb, be sure that your license is a valid form of photo identification and that all of your documents are up to date and not nearing expiration. By taking the time to plan ahead, you can be sure your rental experience will be quick and easy.
