Saving money on Hawaii car rentals at non-airport locations. What you need to know.

When you rent a car rental in Hawaii, if you choose to pickup your rental car at what is called an Off-Site or Non-Airport location, you could save around $15 per week (or $50 per month) on your rental car costs. This is because at all Hawaii airports, the State of Hawaii assesses an 11.11% Hawaii Airport Concession Recovery Fee on the base car rental rate. The 11.11% Hawaii Airport Concession Recovery Fee is NOT collected at non-airport locations. Thus, the 11.11% savings.

Why these fees?

On June 9, 2011, Governor Neil Abercrombie signed into law House Bill 1039 HD1, SD2, CD1 as Act 104, Session Laws of Hawaii 2011. Part II of this Act increases the rental motor vehicle surcharge tax from $3 per day to $7.50 per day from July 1, 2011 until June 30, 2012. Beginning July 1, 2012, the rental motor vehicle surcharge tax will revert to $3 per day with no expiration date. 

Effective 7/1/11 - All car rental locations in Hawaii will be charging a $7.50 per day Hawaii State Rental Motor Vehicle Surcharge. There is no longer a separate $3.00 per day Highway Surcharge. The $7.50 will be applied at Airport as well as Off-Airport locations. This is an industry wide change. All money collected will be remitted to the State of Hawaii.

How to avoid these fees and save money on your Hawaii car rental.
Instead of putting in an airport code like HNL, OGG, KOA, etc., put in HAWAII as your location. The reservation page will then show all airport and non-airport locations and ask you to choose (if that car rental company has any non-airport locations). See if there is a location near where you want to pick up your car. Please Note: You will may need to take a taxi cab to some of these locations.
